In 2012 QUT Creative Industries will be offering a new short course program for the general public to attend.

In order to help them design the workshops available on the new program, they invite you to participate in their online survey. They are seeking your views on which short courses interest you across the areas of creative arts, design, media and architecture.

You won't need to be studying a degree to now gain access to their world-leading lecturers and tutors in order to improve your competitive creative edge in the workplace.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

To provide administrative support to the organisation’s exhibitions program
To support the development and implementation of artisan’s touring exhibitions program.

MAJOR DUTIES

Prepare exhibition manuals for touring exhibitions, including database of works, itinerary, freight information, installation instructions, packing/unpacking instructions and photograph and create contents list.
Liase with venues and freight companies to ensure timely delivery of exhibitions
Liase with venues for contracts, payment of hire fees, delivery of marketing material and final venue reports
Assist with exhibition installation
Assist with exhibition research
Write labels and information panels for objects and artists
Arrange the design of marketing materials

TRAINEESHIP CRITERIA
This position is a traineeship funded by the Queensland Government.
As such eligible applicants must be living in Queenlsand and be an Australian citizen or a temporary visa holder or a permanent resident of Australia, must not have previously participated in a traineeship and must be unemployed and disengaged in the labour market as follows:
a) Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples
b) Australian South Sea Islanders
c) Long Term Unemployed - people who have not been in employment for 12 months or longer
d) Older job seekers aged 45 years and older
e) Women re-entering the workforce
f) People from a non-English speaking background, including recently arrived migrants, refugees and humanitarian entrants

h) Recently retrenched workes who have low level skills and are unlikely to easily find alternative

Desert Psychedelia hits Horsham Regional Art Gallery

Artisan travelling exhibition 'Jimmy Pike: Desert Psychedelic' opened early November at Horsham Regional Art Gallery to the great delight of visitors. As curator Alison Eggleton notes: 'All visitors have responded to the Desert Psychedelic exhibition with excitement and delight. The bright colours and vivid designs have transformed our gallery into a joyful space.'

One local councillor made Horsham Regional Art Gallery staff Jimmy Pike badges for the opening from Jimmy Pike fabric they had, ensuring everyone got into the desert psychedelic spirit.

The exhibition closes at Horsham Regional Art Gallery on the 18th of December 2011.

The Australia Council in partnership with State and Territory Arts Agencies invites expressions of interest from Indigenous artists and groups to be a part of the Australian delegation attending the 11th Festival of Pacific Arts to be held in Honiara, the Solomon Islands from 1 to 14 July 2012.

Expressions of interest are sought from Indigenous artists and groups who have experience in the areas of traditional and contemporary dance, music, theatre, literature, visual arts, crafts, filmmaking and digital media. The final delegation will be limited to a maximum of 30 delegates from across Australia. Under the guidance of the Curatorial Team, the delegation will be required to participate in a program of events across 14 days, which will include performances, presentations, forums and advocacy events.

Expressions of interest will be selected that demonstrate the following criteria:
• Experience in international/national touring, and/or working as a part of a team
• Understanding the cultural responsibility of indigenous artists and/or organizations as ambassadors of Indigenous culture
• Excellent artistic skills and product/material that is export-ready
• Highly motivated and dedicated

To be eligible for selection, delegates will be required to:
• Possess or obtain a current Australian passport
• Provide confirmation of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander identity provided y an organization registered under the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976 or other relevant legislation, as requested by ATSIAB
• Submit examples of work on DVD or USB, including high quality digital imagery where appropriate.

Save Craft Australia

On Thursday, 12 October, Craft Australia was officially notified that it had been 'defunded': it will receive no more triennial funding from the Australia Council for the Arts beyond the end of 2011.

While Craft Australia and the broad constituencies it represents and supports would dispute this decision, the result effectively means the organisation has no funds to operate beyond 31 December 2011. This decision comes at a point when the sector is poised to make some significant developments in relation to craft, design, innovation and the creative industries, and in which Craft Australia has played and would have continued to play a significant role.

Your help

Craft Australia and artisan would greatly appreciate your support and assistance to get Craft Australia refunded for a further period so that it can ensure that the key tasks carried out by Craft Australia are continued. Craft Australia has 14 working days before they close the doors on this chapter of activity, and all the projects that have gone along with it.

The Lightness Matrix 2: SPACE : Glen Henderson at Federation Square

FROM 17 October to the End of December Federation Square Screens will be enlivened by a new sort of puppet theatre week nights from dusk until 9pm.
Glen Henderson, exhibits Matrix 2 as part two of a three part Project developed as Artist in Residence at Creative Industries Queensland University of Technology.

With SPACE as its theme the second work in the Matrix story harnesses the organic patterns of microscopic life that energises her work to explore the nature of spatiality in both its physical and spiritual guises.

In a search for mastery of some kind at the risk of metaphorically crashing to the ground, Henderson employs transitions reminiscent of puppet theatre. In introducing each scene, her characters are more like scaled up figurines than puppets as they command centre stage before flying off to sit within the props to watch.

This unfolding story creates the impression of a new sort of puppet show and selling ones sole for knowledge and skill ensues until the curtains are drawn to a close and the story unfolds again.

Writers of stories, films and operas have reinterpreted this legend through stories appropriate to their own time.

Artisan recently showcased the work of eight leading Queensland practitioners at The Premier of Queensland's Export Awards 2011. The event was held last Thursday the 20th of October at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Zonta Club of Brisbane Breakfast - Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor Event

The Zonta Club of Brisbane Breakfast enjoyed an evening event at artisan last night. Members enjoyed the hospitality of artisan whilst viewing the Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor exhibition. Those who attended were also fortunate to hear from two women featured in the exhibition.

Barbara Heath, a local jeweller whose brooch was inspired by the Tasmanian tinker - Ma Brown, spoke of her experience of creating the work for the exhibition. Heath owns a property near to where Ma Brown resided, and was fortunate to find a peg produced by Ma Brown whilst renovating this. Such a close connection clearly imparted an emotional sentiment in the piece.

Brit Andresen is one of the 100 inspiration Australian women showcased in the exhibition. Her work in the field of architecture has carved a way forward for future female Australian architects. She was the first woman to receive the prestigious Royal Australian Institute of Architects’ (RAIA) Gold Medal. Andresen also received funding from Zonta early in her practice to attend a conference in Venice, and spoke of how this positively impacted on her career development.

BCM creative partnership with artisan announced.

Brisbane agency BCM has today announced a creative partnership with Artisan Gallery which will see a fully operational art gallery built in BCM’s Fortitude Valley agency. BCM’s gallery will be called ‘Crucible.’ A purpose built gallery space starts construction this week and is designed by renowned architects Donovan Hill.

The gallery will host 4 exhibitions per year which will be curated by Tasha Finn who has been appointed as an ‘Emerging Curator’ by Artisan and BCM. Tasha holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Art History. In her relatively short career so far, Tasha has worked in both public and private galleries in South-East Queensland preparing exhibitions with artists who work in a variety of media.

The first exhibition launches with the official opening of the BCM Crucible Gallery early in the New Year.

“We believe this to be the first of its kind” commented BCM Agency Partner, Paul Cornwell.

“We’re really excited about broadening our creative perspective via this gallery and partnership with Artisan. Exhibits will range in nature from jewellery, furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, fashion, textiles, paperware, leather goods, and interior products”.

“Clients and visitors to the agency will be able to tour the gallery. Students will be invited to special events. BCM staff will be able to run meetings and workshops within the gallery as it will be set up with a functional yet relaxed meeting space” said Cornwell.

“It will be a terrific hub of creativity in the agency. We already have many bookings for the space. It will really foster idea generation and thought leadership” added BCM Agency Partner, Kevin Moreland.

Now in its twelfth year, the Art Jewelry Forum (AJF) Emerging Artist Award offers a $5,000 prize to an emerging contemporary jewellery artist. The purpose of the award is to acknowledge promise, innovation, and individuality in the work of an emerging jewellery artist, and to help advance the artist’s career.

The competition is open to makers of wearable art jewellery who:

have completed their academic/professional training,
have been out of school for one year or more,
and whose submitted work must have been unsupervised; work from BFA or MFA shows may not be submitted.

Beginning with this year’s award, artists who have had a solo exhibit in a gallery or museum may also apply.

The winner will be announced at SOFA New York (International Exposition of Sculpture Objects and Functional Art), April 2012, where the artist’s work will be exhibited at one of the AJF member galleries. The artist’s work will also be featured in an AJF ad.

Opportunity: Artists to Learn the Art of Arts Business

Artists who want to be successful in business have the opportunity to participate in a series of business development workshops over the next few months to be run by Flying Arts and Artworkers Alliance.

Director of Artworkers Kevin Wilson said that the business workshops will be beneficial for emerging and practicing artists in Brisbane, providing an opportunity to gain arts business skills and develop pathways towards a sustainable career.

The first workshop 'How to - plan and manage an arts project' is supported by Art Shed Brisbane and will be held on Sunday 18 September at Circle Gallery, 274 Montague Rd West End from 10am - 4pm.

Other workshops in the series to be held in Brisbane over the next few months include: 'How to - set up & run your arts business'; 'How to - plan and facilitate an arts workshop'; and 'How to - write about, document and present your art'.

The cost of each workshop is $40 for members or $50 for non members. Bookings and payments must be made in advance to ensure a place is available.

The Sixth Extinction: Our Postcolonial Ecology is an exhibition of small scale sculptural works and jewellery created during Locke's Master of Visual Arts Candidacy. Extending the field of contemporary jewellery and small object practice, Locke visualises aspects of Australia's postcolonial ecoloy, including the direct impact of invasive introduced species on native flora and fauna, and the connection between everyday food products we consume and the endangerment of native species through land clearing for agriculture. Using traditional techniques of hand engraving and fine saw piercing. Locke's delicate depictions communicate compelling visual arguments; the small scale and intricate detail of the works invites us to carefully consider our relationship to the altered ecology of postcolonial Australia.

Applications are now open for the 2012 Laughing Waters Artist-in-Residence Program.

Nillumbik Shire Council, in partnership with Parks Victoria, invites contemporary artists working in any medium to apply for a residency of up to four months during 2012. This is an exciting opportunity for artists to develop their practice in one of two properties located in an inspiring natural setting on protected Eltham bushland, approximately 30 kilometres north-east of Melbourne.

Artists selected for residencies are required to devise and deliver a community project with support from Council Officers.

The Artist-in Residence program is designed to:

contribute to cultural development within the Shire by providing the local community with access to high quality arts activities, and local artists with professional development opportunities

Artisan Tribute to Nancy Wake

Artisan is sad to hear that inspirational Australian, Nancy Wake, passed away on Sunday aged 98. Known as 'the White Mouse', Nancy Wake was the Allied Forces' most-decorated servicewoman of World War 2 and topped the Gestapo's most-wanted list for her covert operations.

In 1940 Nancy joined the resistance movement in Europe and first worked as a courier smuggling messages and food to underground groups in southern France. Over time she helped more than 1000 people flee. By 1942 she had a price of five-million-francs on her head! In 1944 she was put in charge of an army of 7000 Maquis troops, and during the war she performed many heroic acts, including cycling 500km over 71hrs behind enemy lines in order to provide new radio codes.

Artisan will be honouring 'the White Mouse' in an upcoming exhibition Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor: 100 women, 100 stories, 100 brooches. The exhibition features 100 female jewellers responding to 100 inspirational Australian women, through the creation of 100 brooches.

As a tribute to Nancy Wake's extraordinary life, we are providing a sneak peak of her brooch produced by the artist Tracy Pateman. Tracy explains "I am interested in the contrasts between Nancy's unswerving values and desire to take action, and the inertia around ethical issues and human rights in Australia today. The brooch is intended to represent the clarity of purpose that sustained Nancy during the war and afterwards. It also refers to the mountains of central France where she fought behind enemy lines."

QUT School of Design has invited Adj Prof Kevin O’Brien to curate its 2011 Design Lecture Series.

It is entitled Finding Country, a radical project that is concerned with the ground we cannot see. The ground we can see is obvious; it is defined by the boundaries, buildings and cities we live in. But Country (aboriginal place), the most potent of all, is denied. Finding Country can only begin to exist when the seemingly exclusive are brought into a dialectical tension.

Speakers from the USA, Ireland, Japan and Australia will demonstrate comparative ways into design through their individual pursuits.

Talks will take place at the Tribal Theatre, 346 George St, Brisbane, fortnightly on a Thursday starting at 6pm, from the 11th of August to the 20th of October 2011.

Flying Arts and Arts Queensland with the support of the Visual Arts and Crafts strategy are offering 15 grants to support Queensland artists wishing to attend 'We are here' - the first national symposium dedicated to Artist Run Initiatives (ARIs) in Sydney from the 1st to 4th of September 2011.

The symposium is being held by the National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA) and Firstdraft. It brings together leaders from the artist run initiative sector to explore concepts and ideas of future modelling for ARIs and the potential for a national ARI network in Australia. The event will take place in venues across the city and include talks, workshops, events, an exhibition and a live art performance program.

Artists eligible to apply will have demonstrated experience in ARI's and be able to make a positive, articulate contribution to the proceedings. Successful candidates will be those who provide the strongest response to selection criteria with consideration given to equity among regions, gender, area of practice, and social and cultural justice.

Expressions of Interest must be submitted online by COB Friday 12 August 2011. There are 15 grants each worth $650 towards travel and accomodation to participate in the event in Sydney.

Successful applicants will be notified by August 19 2011.

Liana Heath has joined artisan this week as our new CEO.

Liana has completed a Masters of International Business, during which she undertook an internship with the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, and has worked with Brisbane City Enterprises as a business development officer as well as at KPMG as Manager, Advisory Services - Tourism and leisure Group.

Key clients have included Brisbane Marketing, EventsQueensland, QUT's Creative Enterprise Australia, the Sydney and Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centres, and the Glasshouse Art Conference and Entertainment Centre in Port Macquarie. She has also worked with Leightons, Queensland Rail, AngloAmerican, RBS Morgans as well as Universities and TAFE's and numerous government agencies including Arts Queensland.

Two exciting opportunities offered by The Wandering Room.

The Wandering Room has an opportunity for free and publicly visible studio and exhibition space at South Bank that need to be fillled ASAP.

They will be opening a 'pop up' art space on Grey Street South Bank from around the 1st of August that is to begin at the shop formally known as Egg. The devised model for this space includes studio for the Wandering Room and either one or a small number of artists.

Studio space will be granted via short application to The Wandering Room and will most likely be offered as a two week or one month period which will culminate in an afternoon tea exhibition. Your studio space will be visable to the public and so it must be active and grow and develop over your allotted time. In setting up your work we encourage you to think beyond the confines of the shop and where appropriate bring your work out onto the pavement of Grey Street itself.

Artists will be responsible for their own key and will be required to make a minimum of visits to Grey Street per week to ensure that their studio evolves and becomes the beginning of an engaging exhibition early on. The space is to be kept reasonably clean and tidy to comply with South Bank Corporation's expectations as well as heath and safety requirements. As well as a key, your space will have electricity, lighting, and possibly vinyl signage and moveable dividers. The Wandering Room will support you n selling works if you wish and are considering the possibility of an 'Artist's Shop'.

This opportunity would be most suitable for artists currently with work in progress seeking space; people who have diverse and experimental practice working in 3D, performance, new media or contemporary practice; and those who have time to occupy the space during the day or night to make it work.

The exhibition 'Closer' will be held as part of the Wandering Room's Dollhouse program. Dollhouse is an actual dollhouse measuring 100cm wide x 82cm high x 30cm deep. The Art Prize exhibition 'Closer' will be a group show and will include a professionally judged first place cash prize. The winner of the award will get a full page in Independent Press Issue 3, including a life-size image of their work and a prfile. There will also be a runner up 'people's choice' acknowledgement.

Entries must be no bigger than 8 x 8 x 8cm. Only one submission per artist will be accepted. All works submitted will be displayed and entries may be in any media or format.

Regional Arts Fund Round 2 Closing Soon

The Regional Arts Fund (RAF) Community Project Program is assessed by the RAF Assessment Panel. All project proposals must meet all RAF program criteria. Only in special circumstances will RAF support the entire cost of a project. Proposals that identify support (both cash and in-kind) for projects from other funding sources or generate income will be viewed more favorably.

Community Projects
Assistance available for this category will be from a minimum of $5,000 up to a maximum of $30,000. It is anticipated that the majority of grants awarded in this category will be for short-term projects in the range of $15,000 - $30,000.

Applicants that were able to leverage other financial partners would be viewed positively.

Application Process
View the Fund Guidelines to begin the application process. All applications are to be submitted using the appropriate Application Form.

Applications should show evidence of adequate planning. Projects that seek support (in cash and in-kind) from other sources and that generate income are encouraged. Such other support should be clearly identified.

Applications that are incomplete, unsigned, or not postmarked by the closing date, will not be eligible for consideration.

Assistance is available across all artforms for projects which promote excellence in regional arts development, improve access to the Arts for regional Queenslanders, recognise cultural diversity and raise the profile of the arts within regional communities.

All applications are assessed by an independent panel appointed by the Minister for Environment, Heritage and The Arts, the Hon Peter Garrett MP. The panel is drawn from the State's regional arts practitioners, artforms and regional arts organisations.

Acquittal Process
All grants must be acquitted within eight weeks of completion of the project on the appropriate Outcomes Report Form. The Outcomes Report Form must be completed and forwarded, with required support material to Queensland Arts Council.

The 2011 State of Design Festival was tonight launched at the Royal Exhibition Building – the home of a range of activities during the first week of the Festival.

The Opening Night event welcomed the general public, the design industry and business to the Festival. Visitors had the opportunity to view and purchase original works by Australian and international designers, providing an opportunity to interact with industry professionals.

Officially opening the Festival Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business Louise Asher urged Victorians to take part in the diverse events on offer over the next ten days.

“The State of Design Festival celebrates and recognises the excellence of the Victorian design sector, Victorian designers and those businesses that use design to improve competitiveness, enter or expand markets and grow their businesses,” Ms Asher said.

The Festival theme, ‘Design that Moves’, was welcomed in thanks to The One Night Only Festival Band, the Collingwood Skipping Club and the Bodyelectric dancers.

The Royal Exhibition Building will continue to play host to numerous events throughout the Festival, including a showcase of custom-built bicycles and children-friendly workshops.

Open to trade today and tomorrow and then to the public over the weekend (24 - 25 July), Design:Made:Trade returns for its fourth year.

Design:Made:Trade features established and emerging design talent such as small manufacturers, product designers and product makers from a diverse range of design disciplines including industrial design, graphic design, textiles, lighting, furniture, fashion and handmade objects.

Taking place tonight at BMW Edge, Federation Square, is international guest Carolyn Steel’s keynote address. The British architect and author of Hungry City: How Food Shapes Our Lives, will explore how feeding cities arguably has a greater social and physical impact on the planet than anything else we do. Steel will inspire visionary thinking around how we might use food to rethink cities in the future. Tickets will be available to purchase at the door for $20.

New in 2011 is the official Hub for State of Design located at Melbourne Central. The Hub will be the epicentre for a huge range of activities during the Festival. The Freefold-designed and Pandarosa-painted cardboard Hub is a unique starting point for the Festival and particularly the Look.Stop.Shop. trail – a design-led walk through Melbourne’s City Centre.

Shopping will also take on a unique Festival flavour at Melbourne Central, with Melbourne Vintage Recycled Bikes’ pop-up shop, the Hello Sailor market, Made in Melbourne pop-up stalls featuring the work of emerging designers and an incredible exhibition by cult brand, Melissa Shoes. iPhone Application Gives a Voice to Melbourne’s Buildings

Launched today at Federation Square was a new iPhone application walking tour about Melbourne architecture called The Sound of Buildings.

Held Fed Square's Atrium the event was hosted by Melbourne Open House Ambassador and face of Grand Designs Australia, Peter Maddison, and speakers included Major Projects Minister, Denis Napthine, Cox Architecture Director Patrick Ness, Associate State Government Architect, Jill Garner, and State of Design Festival Creative Director, Kate Rhodes.

About The Sound of Buildings:
The Sound of Buildings features audio interviews with the designers, builders and users of ten iconic Melbourne buildings including AAMI Park Stadium, the Royal Exhibition Building and Federation Square and can be downloaded free from the Apple app store. The tour is being released as a part of the upcoming State of Design Festival starting this Thursday 21 July and will coincide with the Melbourne Open House weekend from 30- 31 July.

The tour takes the listener 'behind the walls' of the buildings and give a unique insight into how it was designed and built and what it is like to work there featuring more than 40 interviews. In what may be a first children were interviwed to get their reactions to the buildings (see below for more info and a list of buildings).

This app is for those people who have walked past a building and wondered "what were they thinking?".

Piggy Bank Concept:

The piggy bank is a ubiquitous domestic object. It symbolises hope, aspiration and wishful thinking as well as being a repository for unwanted loose change. Although the archetypal form is slightly abstract (pigs aren't really that fat and round, are they?), it remains quite literal. I am interested in the power of abstraction to provoke a rethinking of the problem and purpose when designing and the Zen idea of ‘richness through exclusion’. Accordingly, I have chosen to both abstract the archetype and create a richer idea of a piggy bank by excluding the form of a real pig, in silhouette, from a plain and simple box. Hopefully the result is perceived as simultaneously obvious and intriguing.

Artist Bio:

Shane Thompson is a prominent Australian architect who has been a Principal of BVN Architecture for 24 years. More recently he has established Shane Thompson Architects and is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland. Thompson’s work has been awarded, published and exhibited extensively both in Australia and internationally with over 100 awards and prizes, including the National AIA Robin Boyd Award for Residential Architecture and a Sir Zelman Cowan Award Commendation. Thompson’s work includes active involvement and board membership of a number of industry, cultural and environment organisations. He was recently appointed as a joint creative director for the 2012 AIA Conference to be held in Brisbane.

Piggy Bank Concept:

Soft underbelly was inspired by thoughts about how critical the flow of cash is through our contemporary lives, and how difficult it often is to save. I saw my piggy bank as something very ephemeral, a place where it would be good to think it might be possible to stash some cash, but also a place that is in a sense regularly defiled by the ongoing demands we place on ourselves to maintain our perceived needs. In my case this manifests itself as an unhappy pig that has been rolled over exposing its soft underbelly to those constant demands conceding, under duress, to the need for instant access to the cash.

Artist Bio:

David Shaw has been a practicing designer for more than 30 years, with a career that includes stints as a Design Lecturer, Designer Maker, and in-house Designer for a number of creative organisations. Shaw established his own company (Street & Garden Furniture Co.) in 1991 to design and produce street furniture and undertake commissions for significant urban spaces. With the success of his company he has been able to bring other designers into the organisation, and provide a stepping stone in the establishment of their careers. Shaw is also an active contributor to the creative industries through his membership of various creative organisations. Shaw and his company's work is extensively published and has received many industry accolades.

As we approach a cashless system, traditional saving rituals begin to decay. Pledge Identification Gateway (PIG) offers emotional incentives to save while representing the health of a virtual money box. Each PIG carries a unique QR code which is scanned with a smart phone to make a payment. The PIG then illuminates to reward the act, but slowly fades until completely dark, indicating that the money box has been neglected.

Aiming to surprise and inspire, Björn Rust believes in socially responsible concepts with clear semantics and appealing aesthetics. Seeking new materials and processes, he values honest and holistic solutions. Rust has studied and practiced communication and industrial design, while having also worked in architecture. In 2008 Rust co-founded Snack On, a design studio focused on independently manufacturing and distributing products he and his collaborator, Surya Graf, develop. He also runs his own practice while consulting for Street & Garden Furniture Co. on urban design concepts. During the past twelve months Rust has worked to create a collective of Queensland based designers to independently showcase local design and manufacture in Australia and abroad.

The 4th Biennial Australian Animal Studies Group Conference 2011 will be held at the Queensland College of Art on the 10th-13th of July. The conference theme is: Animals, People - a shared environment: http://www.aasg2011.com.au/

J&SO are hosting an exhibition of small works to coincide with the conference. The exhibition will be installed in the built-in locked cabinets in the QCA library and the Webb Building foyer.

This will be a selling exhibition, 10% commission will be taken on sales. A photograph of the work will replace works that are sold (to be supplied by the artist, or else will be taken by exhibition organisers).

All jewellers and small object makers working in any media are eligible to express interest. Artists will be required to pack, freight and insure their own works.

Expressions of interest must be submitted by 28 June 2011 and should include dimensions and media along with an artist's statement (max 150 words).

Accelerate: Australian Indigenous Creative Leadership Programme

Applications are now open for ACCELERATE, a unique professional development initiative designed to boost and further the careers of Indigenous Australians working in the arts.

ACCELERATE provides an intensive, fully funded programme for four successful candidates that includes tailored leadership development, mentoring and industry placements in Australia and the UK.

Developed in response to the lack of representation of Indigenous Australians in positions of influence within the creative sector, ACCELERATE recognises future cultural leaders and equips them with the profile, skills and networks to drive their own careers, both internationally and at home.

The programme is designed to meet the needs of individual participants, with two parts taking place in Australia and the UK. Eight shortlisted applicants will participate in a cultural leadership workshop in Australia, with four subsequently selected to travel to the UK for a formal professional visit within Britain's world-renowned creative sector.

We're now seeking expressions of interest from Indigenous creative leaders across Australia. Applicants should have 5 - 10 years experience in their creative field and be poised to take the next steps in their careers.

Organisers will be working closely with participants to create a programme that suits their area of expertise and professional aspirations. Applicants are invited to self-nominate, or can be nominated by community peers and industry leaders.

Piggy Bank Concept:

This little piggy bank is a cube which subdivides into three compartments, representing three roles – living, saving and giving. Living is for week-to-week, month-to-month living expenses. Saving is for building up a fund for investment or a rainy day. Giving is for donating money to worthy causes, and is thus good for the soul. All three have slots for inserting money of course, but they are also perforated with tiny apertures so that you can see your money accumulate in each. Each segment is an irregular shape cut in the likeness of a fault-line, indicating that the condition isn’t stable until all three abut in the ‘complete’ cubic form. Thus, the piggy bank is not just a piggy bank, but an embodiment of a life in harmony – where living, saving and giving find their perfect alignment.

Artist Bio:

Our piggy bank has been designed by Casey and Rebekah Vallance, two of our most revered design architects, and Troy Rafton, head of our 3D visualisation team. Casey has been design architect for SW1 South Bank, Marina Point Cairns and the new University of Queensland Oral Health Centre about to begin construction adjoining Royal Brisbane Hospital. Rebekah has designed two houses and the children’s playground at Elysium Noosa, and is currently design architect for the mixed use Mosaic development in Fortitude Valley. Casey and Rebekah also design plate steel and aluminium furniture.

Piggy Bank Concept:

Initially, it was hard to resist the temptation of taking a cheeky approach and re-working the humble form of a ‘piggy bank’ into something a little juicier. In the end though, the inspiration was Matryoshka dolls (Russian nesting dolls). The nesting birds lend themselves to many interpretations of capital growth through their size, increasing ‘investment capacity’ and ‘returns’, and the basic idea of starting small and growing over time. There is also the physiological reference to reproduction and growth of numbers, in this case a family of penguins - each lending its services as a bank to a different member of the family. This way mum, dad and junior all have a ‘penguin bank’ of their own – allowing saving to become a more socially rewarding activity for the whole family to enjoy.

Artist Bio:

My path to design came from my father teaching me how to make things with my hands, and my mother who nurtured my artistic tendencies through art and craft. I attended a Steiner school in Byron Bay and then studied fine art at university before graduating with a Bachelor of Industrial Design from Queensland University of Technology in 2009. Since then I have worked as a freelance artist and designer but now enjoy the stimulation of working on all facets of interdisciplinary design challenges at Studio Derlot.

Capital Growth - Marc Harrison

Piggy Bank Concept:

Pygg refers to a type of clay used to make household items around the 15th century. Often money was kept in Pygg clay jars, and so the term Pygg Jar became Pygg Bank. From there the name evolved to become the Piggy Bank. My design references the original Pygg Jar, in this case a round-bottomed jar that achieves balance through the ballast of the coin. The coins slide off the lid into the jar without removing the lid. It is much easier to save if we have a purpose and so my design has a personalised element as a reminder of this goal. This is incorporated by a card clip in the lid where a symbol or picture can be inserted as a reminder and an encouragement.

Artist Bio:

Marc Harrison studied Interior Design at the Queensland College of Art and began a furniture and fittings design label soon after graduating. His early designs included furniture, lighting, accessories and door hardware, and he manufactured and sold directly to national retail shops. One of Harrison’s designs was selected for the International Design Year Book 1996 by Alesandro Mendini, an Alessi design pioneer, and this launched Harrison’s designs overseas, eventually leading to the development of Husque in 2003. Husque products use a unique composite material of recycled Macadamia shell, are sold in 8 countries and have been taken up by the Museum of Modern Art, New York and more recently Paul Smith, London. Harrison continues to design experimental one-off pieces like this piggy bank as well as developing the Husque label.

Piggy Bank Concepts:

With so much of our banking being done electronically now, the idea of saving for things with real money is disappearing, so the idea of a piggy bank needs to change. Cash is now used for small daily purchases, rather than being something that we try and stash away. Most people tend to have a jar or a bowl filled with coins that they dive into whenever they need some quick funds. The Nest is a twin layered bowl that can be a place to keep your loose change but also your keys, jewellery and mobile phone. It is intended to be that home spot for your precious things as well as something that you use every day. While the form was initially inspired by an image of a traditional Roman clay money box from the 3rd century AD, the Nest would be manufactured or finished in materials including anodised aluminium, polished stainless steel and brushed copper.

Artist Bio:

With a background in Architecture and Industrial Design, Surya Graf has predominantly focused on furniture design within the urban environment. He has designed products for major streetscape projects throughout Australia and internationally, and been nominated for numerous design awards. Graf develops interior furniture, lighting and homeware products through his own studio, while also collaborating on events and exhibitions. In 2008 Graf co-founded the Snack On design label and online store. While always focused on functionality and a refined simplicity of form, his design practice is influenced by new technologies combined with an innovative use of existing materials and processes.

Asialink 2012 Arts Residency round NOW OPEN!

Asialink's 2012 application round for arts residencies opened on 1 June, and will close on 1 August 2011. Residency grants are available for visual and performing artists, writers and arts managers. Each year Asialink sends up to 40 Australian artists to live and work in Asian countries. Since its inception in 1991, the program has sent more than 600 people to hosts in over 19 countries.

Piggy Bank Concept:

My first reaction to this project brief was to be political or to make a statement. I thought of all the things we are forced to throw money into – petrol pumps, banks, multinational companies that dominate the market place. After growing bored with these thoughts I pondered on how you depict a rainy day in the form of a piggy bank, because everyone saves their coins for a rainy day. Finally I focused on the rapid prototyping process and a form that I would like to see as a piggy bank. This is how Scrooge the tug boat evolved. It could be from watching the tugs in Fremantle harbor with my sons, plus I have always liked the squat and broad form of tug boats, they seem to have a great proportion and as an object for a child’s room Scrooge fits well.

Artist Bio:

Jon Goulder designs and builds timeless furniture that can be handed down through generations. In 1992 he completed an apprenticeship in upholstery and furniture making to become a fourth generation craftsman and in 1994 he began designing soft furnishings for large commercial retailers. Since then he has designed a body of work which positions him as a stand-out Australian designer. He describes his clean-lined design sensibility as something of a reaction against the antique styles he was exposed to in his initial training. Goulder’s work has featured in major exhibitions and publications around the world and his designs are in the collections of many national and international museums and art galleries.

Why are piggy banks so negative and boring? The Addi+ion piggy bank aims to change traditional concepts of the porcelain moneybox. Positivity and growth are key themes for this innovative little piggy bank. Coins are easily inserted through the “+” shaped money slot which reinforces the concept of saving money and adding wealth. Once a layer is filled, the Addi+ion piggy bank can grow and expand with extra layers providing extra savings capacity. As the bank grows it visually, emotionally and positively reinforces the act of saving money. When no more money can be added, the bank can be flipped over, snap in cover removed and the saver rewarded with their capital growth!

Artist Bio:

Neil Davidson is the Design Manager for CMD Product Design and Innovation, one of Australia’s most progressive design consultancies. Davidson’s work covers all aspects of design management; from style, innovation, function and product life cycle through to user safety. Starting his career as a CMD intern while completing a graduate diploma of Industrial Design at Queensland University of Technology, Davidson has gone on to grow with the company and now manages CMD’s large team of talented designers who have won eight Australian Design Awards in the last five years. A career standout for Davidson involved the design of the Cox Stockman Lawn Tractor which received numerous awards.

Piggy Bank Concept:

Whether we like it or not, the concept of saving money is society’s way of building. Rather than hiding your savings away in a traditional piggy bank, I wanted the money to be visible, allowing the child to interact with their savings, creating a visual reference to money as a building block. My design incorporates a 50 cent coin and is reliant on the coin for its structure. The pieces will not snap together and create their shape without it. The more that is saved the bigger the structure, which promotes the concept of the financial building block in a way that begins as a game.

Artist Bio:

Jason Bird graduated from the Queensland University of Technology with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Built Environment) and Graduate Diploma in Industrial Design. He began his career in luminaire design at one of Australia's largest commercial architectural lighting manufacturers before relocating to the USA. In 2001 he founded his own design studio, Acidlight. Experiencing great success in Australia with accolades from the Design Institute of Australia and Australian Design awards, Bird was named as one of Australia's Smartest 100 by Bulletin Magazine in 2004. With this growing local and International success, he established his own luminaire and object studio – Luxxbox. Recently, Bird’s stool “Tingle” has been purchased by Google Inc to be their exclusive exhibition and conference seating.

FRAGMENT - Kirsty Boyle

Kirsty Boyle’s work examines robots as subjects of culture with particular emphasis on how we experience and personalise our interactions with them. Her practice is truly interdisciplinary, encompassing skills in sculpture, theatrical performance, film and animation, digital arts and design, mechanical and electrical engineering and artificial intelligence.

Her passion for robots has driven her to travel the world in order to work with other like-minded artists, puppeteers, animators and scientists. In 2002, she began studying under Mr Tamaya Shobei, a ninth generation Karakuri Ningyo craftsman and the last remaining mechanical doll Master in Japan. Kirsty is currently his only student, and the only woman to have ever been trained in the tradition. Kirsty has been based in Zurich for the past three years, completing an artist residency at the University of Zurich and participating in major international exhibitions.

FRAGMENT is an ongoing series of interactive modular robots, handcrafted in a range of different materials. Kirsty is interested in the idea of ‘crafting’ and deliberately contrasts high-tech robotics with low-tech or natural materials such as the cardboard and Linden wood used in the construction of these pieces. The inflatable works continue this theme by encasing moss and bamboo fibre in the plastic.

FRAGMENT is an exhibition in progress. Kirsty will be working in this space creating more robots on the following days:

New Jewellery By Anna Varendorff

‘Bending to thought’ is the exhibition title of a new body of work by Melbourne jeweller Anna Varendorff on display until the 4th of June at Ari Jewellery located at 1/760 Brunswick St New Farm, Queensland.

Anna Varendorff has created jewels that map out and frame the body. Her graphic pieces place lines atop the body, mapping areas of ornament.

Formed of silver and powder coated brass they cut a graphic line on the wearer reduced to the most basic lines of jewellery. Living and working from Brisbane until 2009, Anna now lives, works and is completing her Masters of Fine Arts at Monash University.

Having exhibited precious metalwork extensively in Australia and internationally, Anna's practice also includes publci artworks, private commissions and sculptural work. Exploring the active space between Fine Art and Fine Craft practices, Anna's Masters work emerges as both jewellery and installation.

Tell us about your background – how did you come to be a creative practitioner?
I always enjoyed art classes at school however there was always a lot of painting involved and have never particularly liked working with that medium. Once I branched into sculpture in my later years at school I was much more enthusiastic and eager to explore.

After leaving school I completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. As students we were encouraged to network, attend and partake in exhibitions. I chose to take the advice on board and as a result my practise has slowly evolved.

Where do you find your inspiration?
My artistic practice is prompted by the disregarded objects I find within my surroundings. The process of gleaning is central to my work, it is the starting point from which I explore and deconstruct found objects and the landscape in which they were discovered.

What other creative people do you admire?
My practise is currently directed towards the making of jewellery I am inspired by artists who’s practice has had a similar focus such as the late German artist Hermann Junger, and Australian contemporary jewellers Marian Hosking and Roseanne Bartley.

What’s next for your practice?
I am currently engaged in postgraduate study, completing a Master of Teaching at Griffith University, as a result my practice has been put on hold. However I intend to continue to exhibit and to begin making new work very soon.

I couldn’t live without…?
I could not live without my family and friends who constantly provide me with support.

Favourite café/restaurant?
I would prefer to sit down to a home cooked meal prepared by my Grandmother any day. She never ceases to amaze me with new delectable delights.

Favourite weekend pastime?
I thoroughly enjoy rummaging through goods at a flea market or car boot sale.

Tell us about your background – how did you come to be a creative practitioner?
From early on I have always loved to make things, however I never thought I would be able to make a career out of it. When I finished high school I decided to study architecture which I fell in love with and slowly found my own way of working which has come to be the most valuable experience of my creative practice to date. However, architecture in university and in practice differ greatly and the types of conceptual projects we were able to develop at uni were not the kinds of projects you are able to do in practice, unless of course you are Frank Gehry or someone of his league. After 4 years I stopped studying and took a year off, where flicking through the pages of Pol Oxygen Magazine I encountered some practitioners that seemed to get away with conceptual ideas of space in the name of art. At this point I decided I had to stop fighting it and see if I could make this art thing work. I have just completed a Bachelor of Fine Art majoring in Sculpture at QCA and am just in the beginning of my Honours year.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Inspiration generally strikes when you least expect it but currently I find books on philosophy, qualities of architecture, and how the body perceives space to be some of the most inspiring. A discovery can strike from anything that’s why it’s important to always immerse yourself in as much as you can. I am always looking at design and art magazines and blogs, as well as going out and seeing art. Sometimes just being outside of your everyday environment can provide many unexpected encounters.

What other creative people do you admire?
I think anyone who is making a life for themselves following a creative pursuit is someone to admire. But more specifically I love the work of Mikala Dwyer, Roni Horn, Tara Donovan, Ann Hamilton, Matthew Barney, Hany Armanious and Robin Rhodes.

What’s next for your practice?
I am currently studying Honours at QCA where I aim to push my ideas of space even further in the sculptural field. It has long been my goal to merge my love of architecture and sculpture in the creation of large scale spaces that evoke an emotional or sensory reaction in the occupant. Perhaps I’ll even try to change the face of public art and the ‘plop art’ phenomenon that so often occurs.

I couldn’t live without…?
The people I surround myself with daily and my dog - definitely the artist's best friend being a constant companion in the studio.

Favourite café/restaurant?
Currently Flute at Coorparoo.

Favourite weekend pastime?
Trips to the beach, Bangalow or Maleny.

I heART Japan Online Charity Art Auction

In the days following the devastating 11 March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Brisbane-based Japanese ceramic artist Kenji Uranishi and his wife Sonia felt overwhelmed with sadness and a sense of helplessness being so far away and unable to help.

Turning their grief into positive action, a call went out to their network of artist friends and colleagues for help and was answered by more than 20 talented artists from around the country.

What resulted was i heART japan, a beautiful collection of work by a talented group of artists including ceramicists, painters, photographers and designers to be auctioned on eBay over a 2.5 day period starting Friday 8 April (3pm EST) and ending Sunday 10 April (8pm EST).
Net proceeds of the auction will be donated to the Red Cross Japan and Pacific Appeal 2011.
Some of wonderful work that you can bid on include these by Pru Morrison, Matt Dwyer and Mel Robson.
