Some of the happy snaps from last Thursday night's triple opening extravaganza at artisan of Jaishree Srinivasan, Yuta Badayala: In a New Light and Cherish, (m)art's Christmas shopping showcase. A big thank you to all who attended and made the evening the fantastic night that it was!
The exhibitions and Cherish, continue until Christmas Eve (catering for all the last minute shoppers out there!)

Coming soon to Crucible - Yuta Badayala

Look out for Yuta Badayala: In a New Light, the opening in our Crucible space on 18th November. The exhibition comprises a collection of lights which are the outcome of an ongoing collaboration between Sydney-based furniture designers Koskela, and weavers from Elcho Island Arts.

Elcho Island is located in the Arafura Sea off the coast of north-east Arnhem Land in  the Northern Territory. Home to the Yolngu people, it is an important creative hub, with many successful artists.

Yuta Badayala
features work by Mavis Warrngilna Ganambarr, Judy Manany Gurruwiwi, Priscilla Baladurr, Aggie Warradika and Verity Burarrnanga. They have created lampshades using traditional pandanus and bush string weaving techniques. The materials are collected by the artists, dyed using roots and leaves and then woven around frames supplied by Koskela.

Each light is imbued with the stories of their makers and their lands, culture and traditions. Each light is also unique as the artist has interpreted the form which Koskela provided.

The project represents a genuine collaboration with the weavers contributing technical skills, material knowledge and artistic capabilities, while Koskela contributes design and marketing skills along with their significant experience in the interiors market.

Established in 2000 by Russel Koskela and Sasha Titchkosky, Koskela promotes environmentally friendly and Australian manufactured products.

Yuta Badayala: In a New Light
opens alongside Jaishree Srinivasan in the main gallery and the launch of (m)art design store's Christmas Showcase - Cherish on Thursday 18th November at artisan 381 Brunswick St Fortitude Valley from 6pm- 8pm. See you there!
