QUT School of Design has invited Adj Prof Kevin O’Brien to curate its 2011 Design Lecture Series.
It is entitled Finding Country, a radical project that is concerned with the ground we cannot see. The ground we can see is obvious; it is defined by the boundaries, buildings and cities we live in. But Country (aboriginal place), the most potent of all, is denied. Finding Country can only begin to exist when the seemingly exclusive are brought into a dialectical tension.
Speakers from the USA, Ireland, Japan and Australia will demonstrate comparative ways into design through their individual pursuits.
Talks will take place at the Tribal Theatre, 346 George St, Brisbane, fortnightly on a Thursday starting at 6pm, from the 11th of August to the 20th of October 2011.

Grants available for artists to attend 'We are here' - the first national symposium dedicated to Artist Run Initiatives
Flying Arts and Arts Queensland with the support of the Visual Arts and Crafts strategy are offering 15 grants to support Queensland artists wishing to attend 'We are here' - the first national symposium dedicated to Artist Run Initiatives (ARIs) in Sydney from the 1st to 4th of September 2011.
The symposium is being held by the National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA) and Firstdraft. It brings together leaders from the artist run initiative sector to explore concepts and ideas of future modelling for ARIs and the potential for a national ARI network in Australia. The event will take place in venues across the city and include talks, workshops, events, an exhibition and a live art performance program.
Artists eligible to apply will have demonstrated experience in ARI's and be able to make a positive, articulate contribution to the proceedings. Successful candidates will be those who provide the strongest response to selection criteria with consideration given to equity among regions, gender, area of practice, and social and cultural justice.
Expressions of Interest must be submitted online by COB Friday 12 August 2011. There are 15 grants each worth $650 towards travel and accomodation to participate in the event in Sydney.
Successful applicants will be notified by August 19 2011.

Artisan welcomes Liana Heath as our new CEO.
Liana Heath has joined artisan this week as our new CEO.
Liana has completed a Masters of International Business, during which she undertook an internship with the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, and has worked with Brisbane City Enterprises as a business development officer as well as at KPMG as Manager, Advisory Services - Tourism and leisure Group.
Key clients have included Brisbane Marketing, EventsQueensland, QUT's Creative Enterprise Australia, the Sydney and Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centres, and the Glasshouse Art Conference and Entertainment Centre in Port Macquarie. She has also worked with Leightons, Queensland Rail, AngloAmerican, RBS Morgans as well as Universities and TAFE's and numerous government agencies including Arts Queensland.

Two exciting opportunities offered by The Wandering Room.
The Wandering Room has an opportunity for free and publicly visible studio and exhibition space at South Bank that need to be fillled ASAP.
They will be opening a 'pop up' art space on Grey Street South Bank from around the 1st of August that is to begin at the shop formally known as Egg. The devised model for this space includes studio for the Wandering Room and either one or a small number of artists.
Studio space will be granted via short application to The Wandering Room and will most likely be offered as a two week or one month period which will culminate in an afternoon tea exhibition. Your studio space will be visable to the public and so it must be active and grow and develop over your allotted time. In setting up your work we encourage you to think beyond the confines of the shop and where appropriate bring your work out onto the pavement of Grey Street itself.
Artists will be responsible for their own key and will be required to make a minimum of visits to Grey Street per week to ensure that their studio evolves and becomes the beginning of an engaging exhibition early on. The space is to be kept reasonably clean and tidy to comply with South Bank Corporation's expectations as well as heath and safety requirements. As well as a key, your space will have electricity, lighting, and possibly vinyl signage and moveable dividers. The Wandering Room will support you n selling works if you wish and are considering the possibility of an 'Artist's Shop'.
This opportunity would be most suitable for artists currently with work in progress seeking space; people who have diverse and experimental practice working in 3D, performance, new media or contemporary practice; and those who have time to occupy the space during the day or night to make it work.

The exhibition 'Closer' will be held as part of the Wandering Room's Dollhouse program. Dollhouse is an actual dollhouse measuring 100cm wide x 82cm high x 30cm deep. The Dollhouse has 3 levels, 2 main gallery spaces, and has been outfitted with internal lights. The Art Prize exhibition 'Closer' will be a group show and will include a professionally judged first place cash prize. The winner of the award will get a full page in Independent Press Issue 3, including a life-size image of their work and a prfile. There will also be a runner up 'people's choice' acknowledgement.
Entries must be no bigger than 8 x 8 x 8cm. Only one submission per artist will be accepted. All works submitted will be displayed and entries may be in any media or format.

Regional Arts Fund Round 2 Closing Soon
The Regional Arts Fund (RAF) Community Project Program is assessed by the RAF Assessment Panel. All project proposals must meet all RAF program criteria. Only in special circumstances will RAF support the entire cost of a project. Proposals that identify support (both cash and in-kind) for projects from other funding sources or generate income will be viewed more favorably.
Community Projects
Assistance available for this category will be from a minimum of $5,000 up to a maximum of $30,000. It is anticipated that the majority of grants awarded in this category will be for short-term projects in the range of $15,000 - $30,000.
Applicants that were able to leverage other financial partners would be viewed positively.
Application Process
View the Fund Guidelines to begin the application process. All applications are to be submitted using the appropriate Application Form.
Applications should show evidence of adequate planning. Projects that seek support (in cash and in-kind) from other sources and that generate income are encouraged. Such other support should be clearly identified.
Applications that are incomplete, unsigned, or not postmarked by the closing date, will not be eligible for consideration.
Assistance is available across all artforms for projects which promote excellence in regional arts development, improve access to the Arts for regional Queenslanders, recognise cultural diversity and raise the profile of the arts within regional communities.
All applications are assessed by an independent panel appointed by the Minister for Environment, Heritage and The Arts, the Hon Peter Garrett MP. The panel is drawn from the State's regional arts practitioners, artforms and regional arts organisations.
Acquittal Process
All grants must be acquitted within eight weeks of completion of the project on the appropriate Outcomes Report Form. The Outcomes Report Form must be completed and forwarded, with required support material to Queensland Arts Council.

Opening festivities kick off a host of exciting events for the State of Design Festival 2011
The 2011 State of Design Festival was tonight launched at the Royal Exhibition Building – the home of a range of activities during the first week of the Festival.
The Opening Night event welcomed the general public, the design industry and business to the Festival. Visitors had the opportunity to view and purchase original works by Australian and international designers, providing an opportunity to interact with industry professionals.
Officially opening the Festival Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business Louise Asher urged Victorians to take part in the diverse events on offer over the next ten days.
“The State of Design Festival celebrates and recognises the excellence of the Victorian design sector, Victorian designers and those businesses that use design to improve competitiveness, enter or expand markets and grow their businesses,” Ms Asher said.
The Festival theme, ‘Design that Moves’, was welcomed in thanks to The One Night Only Festival Band, the Collingwood Skipping Club and the Bodyelectric dancers.
The Royal Exhibition Building will continue to play host to numerous events throughout the Festival, including a showcase of custom-built bicycles and children-friendly workshops.
Open to trade today and tomorrow and then to the public over the weekend (24 - 25 July), Design:Made:Trade returns for its fourth year.
Design:Made:Trade features established and emerging design talent such as small manufacturers, product designers and product makers from a diverse range of design disciplines including industrial design, graphic design, textiles, lighting, furniture, fashion and handmade objects.
Taking place tonight at BMW Edge, Federation Square, is international guest Carolyn Steel’s keynote address. The British architect and author of Hungry City: How Food Shapes Our Lives, will explore how feeding cities arguably has a greater social and physical impact on the planet than anything else we do. Steel will inspire visionary thinking around how we might use food to rethink cities in the future. Tickets will be available to purchase at the door for $20.
New in 2011 is the official Hub for State of Design located at Melbourne Central. The Hub will be the epicentre for a huge range of activities during the Festival. The Freefold-designed and Pandarosa-painted cardboard Hub is a unique starting point for the Festival and particularly the Look.Stop.Shop. trail – a design-led walk through Melbourne’s City Centre.
Shopping will also take on a unique Festival flavour at Melbourne Central, with Melbourne Vintage Recycled Bikes’ pop-up shop, the Hello Sailor market, Made in Melbourne pop-up stalls featuring the work of emerging designers and an incredible exhibition by cult brand, Melissa Shoes. Shannon Boh’s stunning photography exhibition is another must see.

iPhone Application Gives a Voice to Melbourne’s Buildings
Launched today at Federation Square was a new iPhone application walking tour about Melbourne architecture called The Sound of Buildings.
Held Fed Square's Atrium the event was hosted by Melbourne Open House Ambassador and face of Grand Designs Australia, Peter Maddison, and speakers included Major Projects Minister, Denis Napthine, Cox Architecture Director Patrick Ness, Associate State Government Architect, Jill Garner, and State of Design Festival Creative Director, Kate Rhodes.

The Sound of Buildings features audio interviews with the designers, builders and users of ten iconic Melbourne buildings including AAMI Park Stadium, the Royal Exhibition Building and Federation Square and can be downloaded free from the Apple app store. The tour is being released as a part of the upcoming State of Design Festival starting this Thursday 21 July and will coincide with the Melbourne Open House weekend from 30- 31 July.
The tour takes the listener 'behind the walls' of the buildings and give a unique insight into how it was designed and built and what it is like to work there featuring more than 40 interviews. In what may be a first children were interviwed to get their reactions to the buildings (see below for more info and a list of buildings).
This app is for those people who have walked past a building and wondered "what were they thinking?".

ARTS QUEENSLAND VITRINE DISPLAY - JULY 2011
These exquisite white chocolate creations by Sally Colpoys were recently featured in the exhibition Critical Craftings: Unleashed 2011 at gallery artisan. They have found a new home as the July display at Arts Queensland, alongside the work of Alison Kryvoviaza - a Sunshine Coast based ceramic practitioner and lecturer. Alison's whimsical and delightful ceramic cupcakes and petit fours are available from artisan's (m)art design stores in the Fortitude Valley and Southbank.
